New Year’s Resolutions 2013

Thursday, January 3rd, 2013

I’ve only attempted new year’s resolutions twice in my life. It’s mostly because of my fear of failure. Those two resolutions consisted of resolving to finish every beer I started and getting rid of 80% of the shit in my life.
The beer thing went well until early summer when the morning after I found a half drunk bottle I really didn’t feel like finishing; no problem. I’ll just use it to drown the slugs in my garden. Unfortunately, before I had a chance to right my transgression some well meaning person dumped it down the drain. Fortunately, we had an infestation of chipmunks that year and they ate all the slugs. I was good for the rest of the year but, I hadn’t kept my resolution.
It was some years before I attempted the resolution of getting rid of the 80% of the shit in my life. I purposely didn’t define what the shit was and chose a number that was indefinite so I could claim success and not be burdened with the fear of a lapse in resolve. All I had to do was evaluate most of the commitments I needed to make most of the time. I succeeded. I don’t know if it changed my life for the better but, I’m changed.
I’m changed so much that I can’t quite bring myself to making a new year’s resolution this year.
