I bought a new hard drive to deal with the massive amounts of memory required to produce the show. Steve and I spent a couple of hours trying to record a song he wrote on Friday only to be frustrated by a full memory. Time is turning into a very precious commodity in this project. Now, I look at the credits at the end of a commercially produced show and see how many people put in time taking care of all the little details that go into production and I see what doesn’t get done in my show. It certainly helps if you know what you’re doing. There are a lot of skills I have to learn before I add them to the show. There are a lot of details that I wasn’t even aware of 2 months ago.

Music From Bob’s Basement Part 5
Sunday, November 1st, 2009Music From Bob’s Basement Part 4
Saturday, October 31st, 2009I’ve been living Murphy’s law; If something can go wrong, it will. This time my hard drive filled up. Steve and I were recording a song he wrote and I suddenly saw on the screen a message telling me there wasn’t any more room. Inflation is running rampant not only in government spending but, in the bytes it takes to make entertainment. When I was young a million was a big number and I had heard of a billion but, I wasn’t really sure what multiple of a million it was nor did I think I would ever have to deal with a number that big. When I was recording just audio I bought an external hard drive with 160 gigs. That was probably 4 years ago. I copied the whole hard drive from the G4 mac onto it for backup and it barely made a dent. Everything BoScoDen recorded fit on it, all the music I created through a lifetime of creating seemed like a suitcase in an aircraft hanger. Barely one month of video for Music From Bob’s Basement and I’m wondering how many terabytes I need.
Music From Bob’s Basement Part 3
Monday, October 5th, 2009The premier broadcast of Music from Bob’s Basement was supposed to be October 1st but, that didn’t happen. Bright and early, Friday morning, I called Cablevision to find out why there wasn’t any show the night before. I was told that the computer didn’t have a destination for it when they did the season changeover; whatever that means. They apologized and gave me the direct number of the person in Yorktown that was responsible for it. With so many people apologizing for the mistake I have no idea what particular person screwed up. Walter assured me that the first show will be broadcast Thursday, September 8th.
Music from Bob’s Basement part 1
Saturday, September 26th, 2009I don’t remember the exact moment or thought I had when I made that call to the cable company to make a local access tv show. It wasn’t obvious to me just how much work it would entail. I soon learned that I was to become a producer. They sent me a kit of 36 pages which included a lot of legalize gobbledygook and technical video jargon of which I had never heard. There was also the camera stuff in which my mac computer doesn’t like the windows based file format my camera produced. After struggling to get the performance right only to discover that I hadn’t turned on the camera and finally converting it to a format that I could put in iMovie without being reminded by an image plastered across my creation stating that win4mac is a trial version I finally got to the point where I was moving video clips and audio clips to a time-line. After days of struggling to get the movie looking and sounding the way I wanted it to I found that iDVD was no picnic either. After 3 weeks of work I finally got my first weekly episode on a DVD and delivered to the cable company. I’m going to have to work faster. I’m also going to have to get a lot more material. There are the songs I wrote and songs in public domain but, most of the stuff I’ve mastered I’m going to need a music synchronization license for.
SOUTHERN COMFORT BAND
Wednesday, July 29th, 2009Back in the 1970’s I was in a band called Southern Comfort. I blogged about it on myspace. I’m guessing this blog is starting to get more attention than the myspace site I set up for BoScoDen. There’s a lot of stuff on that site including full song performances you can’t find here so, I made a link.
Playing at Popeye’s Pub
Saturday, June 6th, 2009Playing at Popeye’s Pub is probably the most satisfying experience I’ve had in recent times. Part of the pleasure is derived from the places total lack of pretense; the owners and managers lack a particular vision of the place that prompts other proprietors to propel from the premises anyone who performs an act that they proscribe. In other words they are there to sell drinks period. There might be certain amenities that a prospective patron might find lacking but, the sense of freedom I find there is priceless. I suppose it’s in my nature to try to please an audience and my advanced years might allow me certain liberties that others might be denied but, in the five or so years I’ve been going to Popeye’s I haven’t seen it. All I see is people having fun in a really free environment. I can be myself if I can figure out who that is and Popeye’s Pub seems to be a really good place to find that person.
